Thoughts while sports overlap: Sox fans may feel some pain; Nets’ losses help Celtics; a rematch for Rousey

Random thoughts as the last week of the fall sports scene and the first week of winter sports season overlap…

— Small consolation perhaps, but Husson football is the ECFC co-champion. Norwich gets the NCAA automatic bid winning head-to-head tiebreaker but when the Cadets lost to Castleton on Saturday coach Gabby Price and his Eagles got a share of the conference title.

— I’m still trying to get used to college women’s basketball games playing four quarters instead of two halves.

— Best sounding and most active high school band that I saw and heard during the football season? No question – the Old Town Coyotes band!

— Say what you want about former UMaine Black Bear hockey player John Tortorella (a.k.a. Coach Fix It) but he is 6-6 as head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets after taking over the 0-7 team.

— Just thinking out loud after watching Trevor DeLaite and Emily Gilmore sign UMaine Letters of Intent…could Bangor HS sweep Mr. Baseball and Miss Softball Awards in the spring?

— Red Sox president Dave Dombrowski said there might be some pain for Sox fans in acquiring talent this off season…Not even an aspirin needed for me after getting Craig Kimbrel for those four minor league prospects. Margot and Guerra were not going to beat out Betts and Bogaerts ahead of them.

— Here’s a number…482,533. That’s the number of student-athletes playing NCAA D-I, II, III sports. Add in NAIA, etc and you are talking well over a half million young men and women playing college sports.

— Celtics coach Brad Stevens said he would use the Maine Red Claws and the D-League to develop his young players. So far in two Red Claw games — Terry Rozier (37 mins), James Young (68-mins) and Jordan Mickey (75-mins). This should also be good for selling tickets at the Expo.

— Speaking of the Celtics, perhaps the two most important games of the early season are coming this Friday and Sunday…The first of four games vs. the Brooklyn Nets this season. The C’s own the (1-9) Nets #1 draft pick. You know Danny Ainge wants to tag the Nets with four losses.

— Holly Holm defeating Ronda Rousey is exactly what Dana White and the UFC needed…When is the rematch? Cha-ching…Cha-ching!

— Gostkowski is THE MAN!!
